They have moved the big girl to the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! this morning. This is 747-400 #1 that accomplished the flight test requirements prior to being delivered to Northwest Airlines. The aircraft was removed from service and prepped for the museum by Delta TechOps. To get to the museum they had to remove a bunch of fense at the Atlanta airport, a burm and they had to build ramps off the curbs so the plane and it’s Super Tug can get up and down. Once it is in position it will be open to the public as part of the museum.

I guess Delta is planning to phase out their fleet of 747s by next year?
Sure, maybe they were inherited from Northwest but... :(
Still the Queen of the skies.

Never seen a photo with just the front cowling in place. Are they going to hang run out/dummy engines on it for display?

Those are fan cowls. Yeah, all four will be run out engines and the remaining 2 will be installed when it gets to where it needs to be. I think they, and their thrust reversers were removed to eliminate a bit of weight for the move.

We haven't nailed down a final date. It will depend on how fuel prices.

Yesterday would have been a good day for the move. The 744 made its maiden flight on April 29, 1988.

Oh man, I better hurry up and fly in one of these. I’ve been in a 757 and 777, but still no 747......also that polished one looks really cool

It's time. They are lovely and great to fly on, but the economics and maintenance requirements are catching up.

I guess it's safe to say in a way the 777-300er took the place of the 747

Will they still have them flying Detroit to Narita next spring? Haven’t been on one yet and was hoping to do it on that route.

The 747 is my favorite airliner EVER! Every single one was built in my hometown of Mukilteo, WA. (look it up) I used to love to use that fact on my army buddies who thought they were built in Seattle. I saw the first one fly from my parent’s deck with the F-86 chase plane. doesn’t get any cooler than that. I got to fly on the of the United 747's to Hawaii with the Piano Bar. no kidding, I couldn’t believe it - I went upstairs, ordered a martini (shaken, not stirred up with a twist) at the bar and sat to listen to a guy playing the piano. And I thought: ‘What a country!! Nowhere else!!’
Now I think about that when I’m sitting in coach with not enough leg room to lower the tray table and not even a bag of peanuts. Ah, the good old days..

I’m very familiar with Mukilteo! My in laws live on Whidbey. Grabbing chowder or an ice cream waiting for a ferry is always a favorite.
Cool that you got to see the first flight and enjoy the old luxury. Those were the days!
